March Break

This week (March 14-20) is March Break. We will still be around - exams and auditions still need proper attention! - but not quite as often. Please speak with your teacher regarding your March Break plans. Of course, will be happy to answer your questions if you would like to learn more about lessons with us. But do take some time this week to refresh and revitalize. Your music will thank you!

Tax Time 2016: Important Information for Parents

It’s that time of year again: Tax time. But did you know that, if you have a child taking lessons at Midtown Music School – or indeed, any music education program – you can qualify for a tax credit? Click “read more” to learn about this wonderful federal tax credit and what you need to do to claim it.

According to the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency website, Line 370 on your tax form states:

You can claim to a maximum of $500 the fees paid in 2014 relating to the cost of registration or membership of your or your spouse’s or common-law partner’s child in a prescribed program of artistic, cultural, recreation or developmental activity.

Midtown Music School qualifies for this tax credit because our programs meet the requirements of the CRA, as a qualifying program must:

  •           Be ongoing (a minimum of eight consecutive weeks long)
  •           Be supervised
  •           Be suitable for children

If you would like a copy of your payment records for 2015, please contact us and we will email you a copy for your accounting records.

And finally, so we’re clear: We’re music teachers, not accountants. Please consult a trained, professional accountant if you need further clarification for your specific tax situation.

Summer Music Camp at JVL

Midtown Music School is thrilled to participate in the 15th Annual JVL Summer School for Performing Arts "Music in the Summer" Festival. The Festival will take place from July 2-12, 2016 at YMCA Geneva Park, on the gorgeous shoreline overlooking Lake Couchiching, just a 90 minute drive north of Toronto. The Festival will feature a full program of master classes, concerts and competitions. Students and teachers of string instruments, piano and voice from many different countries will arrive to beautiful Muskoka to take part in the Summer School program. The program features a full schedule of lessons, chamber music, ensembles and concerts. Students also get to participate in supervised watersport activities and many social events.

David Stone and Ida Neufeld will be on staff for the Festival. Ida will be participating as part of the Piano faculty, while David will be working with Double Bass, Theory and Composition students. Participation in the festival is incredibly valuable for musicians of all ages and levels. The extensive musical training they will receive during this period will have a great impact on their personal growth as musicians and as individuals.Students have benefited from these tremendous learning opportunities in the past 14 years of the Festival.

We hope to see you this summer for some amazing music and memories!

Winter Recital: February 7

Our Winter Recital is coming soon!

Sunday, February 7th at 11:00 a.m.

The recital will take place at the Women's Art Association Gallery, located at 23 Prince Arthur Avenue, near Bloor and Avenue Road.

There is no additional fee for the recital! It is included in your Performance Fee, so please bring as many people as you like.

The Women's Art Association Gallery is close to the St. George subway station, with lots of street parking and a large Green P lot within a block or two of the building. The facility is a beautiful space, perfect for a morning concert. Coffee and tea will be served.

We hope to see lots of friends, family and performers showing off what they have learned! The best performances are given to packed houses, so let's come together and make it a morning to remember.
