Something to Brag About

"This time last year, I wasn't even planning to pursue university for music immediately after high school, and when I changed my mind you were committed to preparing me for auditions. I don't have to remind you that I wouldn't have made it into any university for music without support and guidance from you."

On May 15, Midtown Music School celebrated its sixth anniversary. We are incredibly proud of the impact we have had on so many people's lives throughout the years, and look forward to sharing our music with many more people to come. This year in particular we had four students successfully audition for post-secondary music schools. One of them, Gabriel, wrote about his experience with us. While we don't necessarily want to brag about ourselves, this review summarizes everything we strive to achieve. Here's the review (original can be found here):

As someone who's had about a dozen music teachers, I can confidently say that Midtown Music School is staffed with very knowledgeable, extremely qualified musicians.

I've been taking piano lessons with Dr. Karen Broadhurst for four years now and harmony lessons with David Stone for about a year. Karen clearly understands my strengths and weaknesses, which she takes into consideration when we select pieces for exams and when she creates lesson plans. David is an accomplished composer who understands that a student not only needs to understand the rules and conventions of harmony, but why these rules exist and "work" in the first place.

Both of my teachers have provided me with plenty of opportunities to participate in festivals, student and adult recitals, and competitions that have allowed me to grow as a musician and a performer.

Together, they've helped me receive 3 university acceptances for music programs, as well as pass several RCM piano and theory levels (sometimes only within a matter of months!).

The school is conveniently located with a bus stop right in front of the building, and the subway station is only a couple of minutes away. All of the staff are friendly and expert, and clearly care about the development of their students.

I can say with absolute confidence that I can think of no better place for me to have chosen to study music.

Raising Money for Holland Bloorview

We have always tried to give back to the community whenever possible. As such, Midtown Music School is pleased to participate in Holland Bloorview’s Capes for Kids campaign! This fun fundraiser involves someone (in this case, David Stone) dressing in a cape for an entire week to raise money for Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. It’s all about being a hero for kids with physical challenges, be they born with them or rehabilitation. This amazing facility has touched many lives – including our family – so please consider donating towards this amazing cause. (Donations over $10 are eligible for a tax receipt.) Also, as an added bonus: Anyone who donates $50 or more will be entered into a draw for a free one-hour private lesson with David for anything he can teach!

You can donate online by clicking this link. Thank you for your support!

Important 2016 Tax Information for Parents

It's that time of year again: Tax time. But did you know that, if you have a child taking lessons at Midtown Music School - or indeed, any music education program - you can qualify for a tax credit for the first half of 2016? Click through to learn all about this wonderful federal tax credit.

According to the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency website, Line 370 on your tax form states:

You can claim to a maximum of $250 the fees paid in 2016 paid prior to June 30, 2016 relating to the cost of registration or membership of your or your spouse's or common-law partner's child in a prescribed program of artistic, cultural, recreational or developmental activity.

Midtown Music School qualifies for this tax credit under because our programs meet the requirements of the CRA, as a qualifying program must:

  • ·       be ongoing (a minimum of eight consecutive weeks long)
  • ·       be supervised
  • ·       be suitable for children

If you would like a copy of your payment records for 2016, please contact us and we will email you a copy for your accounting records. However, any fees paid after July 1, 2016 are not eligible for tax credit.

And finally, so we're clear: We're music teachers, not accountants. Please consult a trained, professional accountant if you need further clarification for your specific tax situation.
