Joanna Chapman-Smith (Outreach Coordinator)

Joanna Chapman-Smith has been singing and performing since the age of six. She has toured across Canada, Europe and the US many times as a folk singer and songwriter. She has released three solo albums to date, and has received international recognition from the Independent Music Awards for her songwriting in 2010. She also received recognition at home as a performer from the Canada Council for the Arts, the CBC and National Public Radio in the States.

Joanna studied Music and English at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, graduating with her Bachelor of Music degree in 2006.

Joanna is also the founder of Songbird's Travelling Music School, which presents musical workshops, private lessons and music camps from touring Canadian musicians to the various communities they visit. She also works with aspiring songwriters to hone their craft. As a teacher, Joanna is passionate about encouraging students' musicality by promoting an easy and resonant singing voice in singers and the use of effective songwriting tools for those looking to create their own repertoire.

As Midtown Music School's Outreach Coordinator, Joanna helps to broaden our presence in the community, as well as bring the community into our school. We do this through concerts, fundraisers and other events in and around the city. Joanna's amazing talent and compassion make her a perfect ambassador for everything music! You can also contact Joanna to bring her program, Songbirds Travelling Music School, to you!
